When did Spotify Launch, and What are Their Plans with Nike?
The Spotify x Nike Partnership is an innovative combination of music, movement and mental health advocacy. On World Mental Health Day (October 10, 2023), these two titans unveiled their joint venture in the UK to empower young girls through the therapeutic realms of music and dance therapy.
At the core of this partnership is the Make Moves Fund – an initiative designed to fund community projects using music and dance to empower and inspire girls aged 10-17 years.
FLO is proud to support the Spotify x Nike Partnership by championing dance and music as powerful tools for mental well-being, fostering self-expression and individuality and serving as a source of community harmony and shared joy.
Recognizing this, the Spotify x Nike Partnership seeks to leverage these mediums as instruments of positive change for young girls who often face discrimination when engaging in physical activities or sports.
Studies conducted by both brands reveal that 80% of English girls feel alienated when participating in sports, mainly ethnic minority girls from lower socioeconomic backgrounds. Mental health problems become even more prevalent by the time girls reach 18 years old.
Combining music and movement, this music platform and sneaker brand provide an inviting space for girls to discover their potential and strengthen their mental well-being.
An integral component of the Spotify x Nike Partnership is awarding grants worth roughly USD 25,000 each to UK community groups with groundbreaking, girl-centric programs that utilize music and dance to empower girls to pursue self-expression through music and dance. These grants will support UK-based community groups with groundbreaking, girl-specific programming.
History of these two pioneers in their fields Spotify revolutionized how we listened to music in 2006 by making it more interactive to fit different styles. Meanwhile, Nike was established in 1964 and quickly established themselves as a leader in sports shoes and clothing – now, these two brands have come together on an innovative project.
Dan Burrows, Senior Director at Nike, noted the partnership’s goal of encouraging an active, equitable future for girls.
The strength of this collaboration lies in its inclusive nature; its advisory panel comprises representatives from Black Girl Fest, Nike dancer Joelle D’Fontaine and mental wellbeing expert Ciara Dockery from Gurls Talk – among others.
FLO, a London girl group, champions the Make Moves Fund through their music.
